To Sua Ocean Trench is one extraordinary wonder of nature. This beautiful pool is located in Lotofaga village, Samoa. To Sua in translation means “big hole” and a deep one – 30m to the bottom. This natural “hole” is converted into a large swimming area, that attracts a lot tourist.

You can acces the pool via a long ladder, that takes you into clear blue sea water. The whole site is surrounded with beautiful colorful gardens, so if you are into nature photography or just swimming, that is the right place for you.

A seashell or sea shell, also known simply as a shell, is a hard, protective outer layer created by an animal that lives in the sea. The shell is part of the body of the animal. Empty seashells are often found washed up on beaches by beachcombers. The shells are empty because the animal has died and the soft parts have been eaten by another animal or have rotted out. The term seashell usually refers to the exoskeleton of an invertebrate (an animal without a backbone). Most shells that are found on beaches are the shells of marine mollusks, partly because many of these shells endure better than other seashells. Apart from mollusk shells, other shells that can be found on beaches are those of barnacles, horseshoe crabs and brachiopods. Marine annelid worms in the family Serpulidae create shells made of calcareous tubes cemented onto other surfaces. The shells of sea urchins are called tests, and the moulted shells of crabs and lobsters are called exuviae. While most seashells are external, some cephalopods have internal shells.

The magic of Venice in any season has no need to be reminded. It is a very popular destination year round but winter is probably the best time to visit this enchanting city if you want to avoid crowds, live the real Venice’s atmosphere and find cheap hotels.
“Acqua alta” (high water) is a phenomenon which generally takes place in Venice in Autumn and Winter, when a combination of astronomical tide, strong south wind (scirocco) can cause a larger inflow of water into the Venetian Lagoon. But the risk of acqua alta should not prevent you from visiting the city. The floods do not take place everyday and last only a few hours, especially in the area around St Mark’s square, the lowest point of Venice. So pack good waterproof footwear and plenty of warm clothes and stride through the fascinating morning mist that envelops the whole city! Winter in Venice is the season of cold temperatures, icy winds from the sea, quiet streets, misty views and…hot chocolate! In cold weather, you shouldn’t miss the Venetian hot chocolate with whipped cream. Viziovirtù, located in San Tomà in Calle del Campaniel, 15 minutes walk from St. Mark’s Square, is definitely one of the best chocolate shops in Venice and serves a mouthwatering hot chocolate with classic or spicy flavors. Since the days are short in winter, I would suggest you to go sightseeing until early in the afternoon and later enjoy the evening in a cozy restaurant or a romantic wine bar.

Geography
The Republic of Seychelles, located in Eastern Africa, forms a widely scattered archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean. The islands are divided into two main physical types: the group of granitic and mountainous central islands or inner islands, surrounded by flat coastal beaches and the outer islands, representing coral atolls and coral reefs with slight elevations above sea level. The main islands are Mahe (covering 142 sq km), which houses the capital and the only city Victoria, Praslin (with the land area of 38 sq km) famous for the rare “coco de mer” palms and La Digue (10 sq km) featuring Anse Source d’Argent-one of the most famous Seychelles beaches.

The Inner Islands
The Inner Islands offer safe moorings and easy sailing distances with tremendous diversity and breathtaking natural beauty. The largest island, Mahé, offers 44 miles of scenic coastline that features safe anchorages, over 65 beaches and plenty of secret coves and romantic hideaways. Scenic bays include Beau Vallon, Baie Ternay, Port Launay, Anse à la Mouche, Anse Soleil, Baie Lazare, Intendance and Anse Royale. Some of the more secret coves include Anse Major, Anse Jasmin, Anse Du Riz, and Petit Anse.
The smaller islands of Cerf, Moyenne, Round and Ste Anne lie just off Mahé’s eastern coast in a marine park and Conception Island and Thérèse to her west.
From Mahe, you’ll want to visit the twin islands of Cousin and Cousine, and then continue on to the island of Praslin, home to the Vallée de Mai and numerous world famous beaches. The island offers numerous safe anchorages along its 18-mile coastline.
Scenic bays and romantic coves around Praslin include Anse Lazio, Anse a la Farine, Anse Petite Cour, Baie Chevalier, Anse Posession, Anse La Blague, Côte d’Or and Anse Marie-Louise. Satellite islands include Curieuse, St. Pierre, Île Cocos, Aride, Cousine and Cousin, to name a few.
Less than 4 miles southeast from Praslin’s Baie Ste Anne jetty, La Digue is the island where time stands still. Discover its many coves (such as Reunion, Union and Patate) and silver-sand beaches, among which is one of the planet’s most photographed strand, Anse Source d’Argent. There are numerous surrounding islands, including Félicité, Marianne and Grand Soeur, all within easy reach and all offering safe anchorages.
Seychelles Beaches – More than Just Sun and the Sand
In addition to the world famous beaches of the Seychelles, there is bustle of special attractions other than this for visitors. These include the legendary Vallee de Mai in Praslin, named by UNESCO as a world heritage site and known as the Garden of Eden, and L’Union Estate in La Digue Island, home to the one of the most pristine beaches. While Mahé, Praslin and La Digue are the most popular islands, Mahé boasts 65 silver beaches and an assortment of restaurants, cafés, bars and casinos in its tiny capital, Victoria. One may find national monuments, beautiful Creole houses, national reserves and marine parks for exploring, as well as, breathtaking natural wonders above and beneath the waves. Excursions can be arranged, allowing visitors to indulge in the pleasures of glass-bottom boating and a choice of water sports.
There are also golf courses, horse-riding and guided nature tours, where visitors may enjoy some of the rarest species of flora and fauna on earth. Aride Island, one of the world’s most important and beautiful Nature Reserves, is home to breeding seabirds of ten species that are endemic. The Ile Coco Marine National Park is set around 3 small islands, in shallow turquoise sea peppered with a large expanse of coral reefs. The combination of the colours red and green, dot the hillside of Curieuse Island, along with the unmistakable eternally symbolic coco de mer trees, giving it an unforgettable and unique appearance. The Silhouette Marine National Park, which stands at a height of 740m, is the only “paper park” left in Seychelles. Set in turquoise sea, Anne Marine National Park has one of the largest areas of sea grass meadows in the granitic islands. All are a definite must see for any curious visitor.

Cancun’s main ‘hotel zone’ is spread out along a 20km stretch of beach, flanked by a peaceful inland lagoon. The resort has shopping malls and plenty of places to eat and drink, as well as several good nightclubs. An intoxicating mix of the old and the new, the rustic and the sophisticated, and American standards combined with Spanish influence. Lying on the Eastern Coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is Cancun, Mexico’s premier holiday resort, a bustling and chic resort with modern, American-style hotels of a high standard, a multitude of restaurants, soft sandy beaches, and plenty of sports both on land and water. Resorts along the Mayan Riviera have a more relaxed feel while south of Cancun lies the resort of Playa del Carmen with its laid back atmosphere, excellent white sand beach and great variety of restaurants and bars. Nightlife is low key compared to Cancun. The area has many historical sites including Tulum and Chichen Itza, 130 miles from Cancun, one of the most important archaeological sites and capital of the Mayan civilization. Merida is a Spanish colonial city and the cultural capital of the Yucatan region. The main reason for visiting Cancun is to relax on the beautiful white sand beach or go diving to see the coral life. Isla Mujeres, a 25-minute boat ride from Cancun, has good snorkelling and beaches and great diving sites including Los Manchones, La Bandera, Cuevones and the Sleeping Shark Caves. A visit to the island of Cozumel is also well worth a visit.

If you want a lesson in how to get things right, first time, take your Mexico holiday in Cancun. Giving the Caribbean a run for its money, Cancun holidays offer paradise, without the price tag. A generation ago, this sublime spot was a forlorn place – a spur of sand overlooking a muddy lagoon at the edge of the rainforest. Now it’s a billion dollar plus tourism industry, leading the way in showing Central America how to raise its stakes and attract wealthy Americans, fun-loving Europeans and sleek cruise liners, with their all-important holiday dollars. Not to mention the fact that Cancun weddings are becoming increasingly popular.
Make no mistake, when the Mexican tourist authority wanted to create a tourist resort to rival Florida they left nothing to chance – ensuring that Mexico holidays were every bit as good as the best of the Caribbean. Twenty years later, this lonely spur, shaped like a number seven, arching out from the mainland at the old market town of Cancun, is transformed.

Cancun holidays enjoy the saltwater and freshwater activities. The lagoon is clean and fresh, the sand is sieved and sparkly, and the spur of land is now one swift and straight avenue of designer malls, watersports clubs, dolphin shows and sherbert-coloured hotel complexes, each more eye-catching than the last.
There’s not a lot of subtlety here – the international hotel brands jostle each other for attention, creating powder pink castles of ostentatious luxury – replete with complex pool systems, swim-up bars, private stretches of beach (don’t worry, there’s plenty to go round) and all manner of pampering opportunities.

If the Hotel Zone (the name they give to this spur of land) looks daunting in its seemingly never-ending length, don’t worry, it’s all conveniently broken down into sections, each section having enough late night bars, shopping villages, cinemas and waterparks to keep you from wandering too far. But do. Wander all the way into Cancun’s old town (past the largest Mexican flag we’ve ever seen) and explore the taverns, markets and (cheaper) shops of the real Cancun.
And don’t forget to delve deep into the rain forest for three hours to gasp in amazement at the Chichen Itza complex, the Mayan city only rediscovered a century ago, when an explorer spotted the pinnacle of the Pyramid of Kukulcan poking out from the undergrowth which had reclaimed this once mighty city and seat of Mayan power.
A dazzling white vision, rising from the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is every bit as good as the travel brochures proclaim – and the main reason Mexico holidays – and Cancun holidays in particular have become so popular so quickly. And, with its mix of world-class resort hotels, fine beaches, excellent facilities, and fascinating cultural history, it’s not hard to see why this resort easily gives Florida a run for its money.

Mauritius is a relatively small volcanic island located in the Indian Ocean that has garnered itself a great reputation for being one of the best holiday destinations around. It is a place of practically endless soft and sandy beaches with wonderfully waters in various nuances of blue and incredible wildlife. When you throw in a rather curious and interesting mix of cultures, you have yourself a tropical paradise like those you read or dream about.

You may not think of this looking at the place now but the island has only been inhabited since the end of the16th century when it was settled by the Dutch. Unfortunately this change in its political status lead to widespread environmental destruction since the Dutch cut down large areas of forest in order to plant sugarcane. Fast forward a couple of hundred years, some changes of ownership and add in some African and Indian peoples to the mix and you now have modern day Mauritius.

Modern Mauritius still features the huge sugarcane plantations which caused the initial problems but now the island’s ecosystem has reached a different balance, one which implies a rather large number of birds – such as the rare pink pigeons or the echo parakeet – and over a third of its nine hundred plant species being endemic such as the giant banyans and the red-flowering flamboyants.

Once you reach the island get ready to experience a wide variety of activities, sights and sounds. Besides the aforementioned sun, sea and sand that the island offers it also features a great mountain range so whether you’re interested in deep sea fishing, sun bathing or mountain biking the place has it for you, has that and more.

Do you happen to fancy horse racing? Not a problem in Mauritius, the local horse racing club has been founded in 1812 and horse racing is the most popular sport on the island. Experiencing the eclectic horse races in Mauritius is something that should be done at least once by all visitors to the island not only those who are into the races.

Despite the adverse effect that colonization has had on the above water ecosystem the island’s marine life has made it relatively unscathed and it has many things to offer such as dolphins, turtles, corals, sharks and several species of whale.

Mauritius is a wonderful place to visit, as long as you are ok with glorious beaches and the heat of the tropical sun will have no problems finding something to do while you’re there.

Turkey known officially as the Republic of Turkey is a Eurasian country located 97% in Asia (mostly in the Anatolian peninsula) and 3% in East Thrace in Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhchivan) and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. The Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles demarcate the boundary between East Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia. Turkey’s location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it a country of significant geostrategic importance.

Turkey is one of the six independent Turkic states. The vast majority of the population are Muslims. The country’s official language is Turkish, whereas Kurdish and Zazaki languages are spoken by Kurds and Zazas, who comprise 18% of the population.
Turks began migrating into the area now called Turkey in the 11th century. The process was greatly accelerated by the Seljuk victory over the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Manzikert. Several small beyliks and the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm ruled Anatolia until the Mongol Empire’s invasion. Starting from the 13th century, the Ottoman beylik united Anatolia and created an empire encompassing much of Southeastern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. After the Ottoman Empire collapsed following its defeat in World War I, parts of it were occupied by the victorious Allies. A cadre of young military officers, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his colleagues, organized a successful resistance to the Allies; in 1923, they would establish the modern Republic of Turkey with Atatürk as its first president.
The Anatolian peninsula, comprising most of modern Turkey, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world. The earliest Neolithic settlements such as Çatalhöyük (Pottery Neolithic), Çayönü (Pre-Pottery Neolithic A to Pottery Neolithic), Nevalı Çori (Pre-Pottery Neolithic B), Hacılar (Pottery Neolithic), Göbekli Tepe (Pre-Pottery Neolithic A) and Mersin are considered to be among the earliest human settlements in the world.

Starting around 1200 BC, the coast of Anatolia was heavily settled by Aeolian and Ionian Greeks. Numerous important cities were founded by these colonists, such as Miletus, Ephesus, Smyrna (modern Izmir), and Byzantium (later Constantinople and Istanbul). The first state established in Anatolia that was called Armenia by neighboring peoples (Hecataeus of Miletus and Behistun Inscription) was the state of the Armenian Orontid dynasty. Anatolia was conquered by the Persian Achaemenid Empire during the 6th and 5th centuries BC and later fell to Alexander the Great in 334 BC. Anatolia was subsequently divided into a number of small Hellenistic kingdoms (including Bithynia, Cappadocia, Pergamum, and Pontus), all of which had succumbed to the Roman Republic by the mid-1st century BC. Arsacid Armenia, the first state to accept Christianity as official religion had lands in Anatolia.
In 324, the Roman emperor Constantine I chose Byzantium to be the new capital of the Roman Empire, renaming it New Rome (later Constantinople and Istanbul). After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it became the capital of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire).
The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea have a temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Black Sea have a temperate Oceanic climate with warm, wet summers and cool to cold, wet winters. The Turkish Black Sea coast receives the greatest amount of precipitation and is the only region of Turkey that receives high precipitation throughout the year. The eastern part of that coast averages 2,500 millimeters annually which is the highest precipitation in the country.

Ephesus
Ephesus, founded in the 7th century BC, was the most important Greek city in Ionian Asia Minor and was noted for the magnificent Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. By the 2nd century, Ephesus was home to 300,000 people and a major center of trade. The theater could seat 25,000 and the Library of Celsus was second only to Alexandria’s. Located in western Turkey near modern day Seljuq over 6 km from the coast, it’s hard to imagine that this city was once a major seaport. Emperor Constantine built the long colonnaded walk, the Arkadiane, from the theater to the harbor in the 4th century. However, by that time silt from the Cayster River, which today meanders lazily through the plains beyond the ruins, was already filling the harbor. By Byzantine times, the harbor was useless, and the site nearly forgotten until archeologists began uncovering parts of the city in the mid 19th century. The changing Earth, perhaps assisted by early civilization’s land use in the Cayster watershed, was directly responsible for the demise of Ephesus.
Ephesus, one of the 12 cities of Ionia (an ancient Greek district on the western coast of Asia Minor), located near modern İzmir, Turkey. As a port city at the mouth of the Cayster River, it was a major departure point for trade routes into Asia Minor. Known in antiquity for its sacred shrines, notably a famous temple (one of the Seven Wonders of the World) to the goddess Artemis, or Diana, the city was also an important center of early Christianity.
Probably founded in the 11th century BC by Ionian Greeks, Ephesus was conquered by the Cimmerians in the 7th century BC; by Croesus, king of Lydia, in the 6th century; and soon after, by Cyrus the Great, king of Persia. Later it was a tributary of Athens, but it sided with Sparta against Athens in the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). Sparta ceded it to the Persians, who were driven out by Alexander the Great in 333 BC. Under this Macedonian rule Ephesus flourished, and it was briefly renamed Arsinoë. The city passed to Roman rule in 189 BC and remained an important commercial center. St. Paul established a Christian congregation in Ephesus in the 1st century AD, and it was the site of the third general council of the Christian Church, which condemned the Nestorian heresy, in 431.
Having been destroyed by the Goths in 262, Ephesus, although rebuilt, never regained its former splendor. Under the Byzantine Empire it declined, and its harbor silted up; it was abandoned in the 14th century.
Excavations at Ephesus, begun in 1863, have uncovered temples to Artemis, public buildings, works of the Greek sculptors Phidias and Polyclitus, and a portrait of Alexander the Great.

Dalyan
Dalyan is a town in Muğla Province located between the well-known districts of Marmaris and Fethiye on the south-west coast of Turkey. The town is an independent municipality, within the administrative district of Ortaca.
Dalyan achieved international fame in 1986 when developers wanted to build a luxury hotel on the nearby İztuzu Beach, a breeding ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle species. The incident created major international storm when David Bellamy championed the cause of the conservationists. The development project was stopped and the beach is now a protected area.
Life in Dalyan revolves around the Dalyan Çayı River which flows past the town. The boats that ply up and down the river, navigating the maze of reeds, are the preferred means of transport to all the local sites.
Above the river’s sheer cliffs are the weathered façades of Lycian tombs cut from rock, circa 400 BC. The ruins of the ancient trading city of Kaunos are a short boat trip across the river.
The south of Dalyan on the Mediterranean coast, lies İztuzu Beach, near the village of the same name is a popular area for sunbathing and swimming. There are regular boat and minibus (dolmuş) services to the beach. Visitors should be aware of the wooden stakes in the beach to mark nesting sites. The road route is particularly scenic, offering views of Sülüngür Lake. Iztuzu, Dalyan’s turtle beach, was voted the best beach in the world in 1995.
The beach is well known for the Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead Sea Turtles) which have existed for 95 million years. International animal protection organizations monitor and protect the turtles’ nesting grounds in Turkey. The beach is closed during the period of time that the Turtles lay their eggs. On the other side of the beach, lesser known and lesser protected turtles which are illegally fed and coaxed into the river, which has a small salt content (dalyan), and therefore these turtles have to adapt. Fortunately few turtle deaths have ever occurred.

Pamukkale and Cleopatra’s pool
In the extensive ruins of the ancient Greek town Hierapolis (Holy city), now Pamukkale in Turkey there are mineral-bath spa, which include the Cleopatra’s thermal pool.
The ancient city of Hierapolis was founded in about 200 BC and it was prospered under the Romans (as a spa) and later the Byzantines.
The city of Hierapolis was a cure center, famous for the health-giving properties of its mineral waters and hot springs.
Hierapolis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over thousands of years, hot mineral waters had burst from the earth to run through the ancient city of Hieropolis before cascading down over a cliff. These waters contained a high content of calcium, which solidified into snowy white travertine; waterfalls of white stone inlaid with layer upon layer of small pools filled with this calcium-rich warm mineral water. These waters are said to have ‘healing’ powers for all sorts of ailments such as stiff joints, skin irritations and so on. It is said that the famous queen of ancient Egypt, Cleopatra Selene II (the ‘moon’), also known as Cleopatra VIII of Egypt, a Ptolemaic Princess, an only daughter to Greek Ptolemaic, when visited the city, used to take her bath in this pool. The water is the same warm, mineral water that is found in the travertine pools but the base of the pool is strewn with ancient ruins that you can swim around and gaze upon, almost like an underwater museum. Tourists swimming among the ancient ruins.
The sacred pool is littered with marble columns and old stone carvings from the ancient city and tourists can bathe in the thermal pool in crystal clear water. Enjoying a lot of things in the same time, natural beauty, relaxation an curing.
People travel from far to see and swim in this pool together with the smaller ‘rock’ pools. On its bottom lie thousands of various coins which the visitors through in and make a wish! The place is truly magical. The water in the thermal pool is 36-57 C. Swimming with artifacts in the sacred thermal pool. Swimming, filled with the warm waters in which you can let the calcium make your skin feel silky! No wonder why the place is so popular worldwide. Get the feeling and feel like Cleopatra…

Jellyfish (also known as jellies or sea jellies or Medusozoa) are free-swimming members of the phylum Cnidaria. Jellyfish have several different morphologies that represent several different cnidarian classes including the Scyphozoa (over 200 species), Staurozoa (about 50 species), Cubozoa (about 20 species), and Hydrozoa (about 1000–1500 species that make jellyfish and many more that do not). Medusa is another word for jellyfish, and refers to any free-swimming jellyfish stages in the phylum Cnidaria.
Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Some hydrozoan jellyfish, or hydromedusae, are also found in fresh water; freshwater species are less than an inch (25 mm) in diameter, are colorless and do not sting. These are the large, often colorful, jellyfish that are common in coastal zones worldwide. Scientists have evidence of Jellyfish roaming the seas for about 500 million years.
In its broadest sense, the term jellyfish also generally refers to members of the phylum Ctenophora. Although not closely related to cnidarian jellyfish, ctenophores are also free-swimming planktonic carnivores, are generally transparent or translucent, and exist in shallow to deep portions of all the world’s oceans.

The word jellyfish (which has been in common usage for more than a century) is used to denote several different kinds of cnidarians, all of which have a basic body structure that resembles an umbrella, including scyphozoans, staurozoans (stalked jellyfish), hydrozoans, and cubozoans (box jellyfish). Some textbooks and websites refer to scyphozoans as “true jellyfish”.
Since jellyfish are not even vertebrates, let alone true fish, the usual word jellyfish is considered by some to be a misnomer, and American public aquariums have popularized use of the terms jellies or sea jellies instead.
In its broadest usage, some scientists occasionally include members of the phylum Ctenophora (comb jellies) when they are referring to jellyfish. Other scientists prefer to use the more all-encompassing term “gelatinous zooplankton”, when referring to these, together with other soft-bodied animals in the water column.
A group of jellyfish is sometimes called a bloom or a swarm. “Bloom” is usually used for a large group of jellyfish that gather in a small area, but may also have a time component, referring to seasonal increases, or numbers beyond what was expected. Another collective name for a group of jellyfish is a smack.
Jellyfish are “bloomy” by nature of their life cycles, being produced by their benthic polyps usually in the spring when sunshine and plankton increase, so they appear rather suddenly and often in large numbers, even when an ecosystem is in balance. Using “swarm” usually implies some kind of active ability to stay together, which a few species like Aurelia, the moon jelly, demonstrate.
Most jellyfish have a second part of their life cycle, which is called the polyp phase. When single polyps, arising from a single fertilized egg, develop into a multiple-polyp cluster, connected to each other by strands of tissue called stolons, they are said to be “colonial.” A few polyps never proliferate and are referred to as “solitary” species.

All jellyfish sting their prey using nematocysts, also called cnidocysts, stinging structures located in specialized cells called cnidocytes, which are characteristic of all Cnidaria. Contact with a jellyfish tentacle can trigger millions of nematocysts to pierce the skin and inject venom, yet the sting of only some jellyfish species causes an adverse reaction in humans. When a nematocyst is triggered by contact by predator or prey, pressure builds up rapidly inside it up to 2,000 lbs/sq. inch until it bursts open. A lance inside the nematocyst pierces the victim’s skin, and poison flows through into the victim. Touching or being touched by a jellyfish can be very uncomfortable, sometimes requiring medical assistance; sting effects range from no effect to extreme pain to death. Because of the wide variation in response to jellyfish stings, it is wisest not to contact any jellyfish with bare skin. Even beached and dying jellyfish can still sting when touched.
Scyphozoan jellyfish stings range from a twinge to tingling to savage agony. Most jellyfish stings are not deadly, but stings of some species of the class Cubozoa and the Box jellyfish, such as the famous and especially toxic Irukandji jellyfish, can be deadly. Stings may cause anaphylaxis, which can be fatal. Medical care may include administration of an antivenom.
In 2010 at a New Hampshire beach, pieces of a single dead lion’s mane jellyfish stung between 125 and 150 people. Jellyfish kill 20 to 40 people a year in the Philippines alone. In 2006 the Spanish Red Cross treated 19,000 stung swimmers along the Costa Brava.
